How many lessons will I need? Before taking your driving test you will need to have reached a standard whereby you can drive safely and without help in any road situation (except motorways). The number of lessons needed to reach this standard will depend on your age, driving ability, any previous experience, the length and frequency of your lessons and whether you are able to practise privately (with a family member perhaps). According to the DSA, an average 17 year old will require a minimum of 40 hours of professional instruction plus a minimum of 25 hours private practice. Everyone is different however and the lessons I provide will be structured to your needs.
How long are the lessons? Lessons are 2 hours long. Usually a person learns more quickly and requires fewer lessons overall when taking 2 hour lessons rather than 1 hour lessons. This will bring you to driving test standard much more quickly and cost you less overall.
Should I practise with my parents as well as taking lessons? Private practice can be a useful supplement to your driving lessons. Usually it is best to have a few driving lessons beforehand and then to view it as a way of practising what you have learnt in your lessons. I will be able to advise you further on this during your lessons.
Will I have to drive in busy traffic? If you haven’t driven before you will start your training in a quiet area with minimal traffic. As you gain confidence and control of the car, I will gradually introduce you to more challenging situations. However, you will not be placed in situations that you are not ready for and do not yet have the skills to deal with. By the time you take your test you will have experience of a wide range of driving situations including driving in traffic.
Why don’t you take pupils on motorways? It is against the law for a learner driver to drive on a motorway. As this is an essential area of driving I strongly recommend motorway training once you have passed your practical test. The best way to do this is through a pass plus course but motorway lessons can be provided if you prefer.
Can I smoke during lessons? I do not permit smoking in my car but breaks during lessons can be accommodated.
